Report: PC Market Expected to Plunge in 2014

by: Bryon Turcotte  /  December 3, 2013

According to an article published by PC World, industry analysts predict that the personal computer market will experience a continued decline as we approach 2014.

The International Data Corporation (IDC), American market research, analysis, and advisory firm, reports that with a 15 percent drop in consumer PC sales, the market is expected to fall 10 percent by the close of this year – the most significant decrease in history, according to the article.

The article states that IDC had previously predicted a 9.7 percent decline after a slow sales showing of Windows 8.1.

Jay Chou, a senior research analyst at IDC, is quoted in the article to say, "_Perhaps the chief concern for future PC demand is a lack of reasons to replace an older system. PC usage has not moved significantly beyond consumption and productivity tasks to differentiate PCs from other devices._."

"_As a result, PC lifespans continue to increase, thereby limiting market growth_, "said Chou. In their reports, IDC has defined a "PC" as desktop computers, notebooks, and other hybrid devices that can be used in "_clamshell and tablet mode_," according to the article.
