How To Choose Your Windows Server OS

Hostwinds is proud to offer all three of the currently supported Windows Server operating systems (2008, 2012, and 2016). While all three have similar functionality, there may be reasons you wish to choose one specific version over the others. If you're unfamiliar with the server versions, you can compare them to the desktop versions, as noted below.

  • Windows Server 2008 = Windows 7 Desktop
  • Windows Server 2012 = Windows 8 Desktop
  • Windows Server 2016 = Windows 10 Desktop

How To Choose Your Windows Server OS

One of the most important factors in choosing your operating system version would be the server's resources you're hosting it on. For example, if you're choosing a lower resource VPS, you would be better served using the 2008 version as this uses the least resources and would allow the best performance.

Another common factor in the choice of operating system would be compatibility with third-party software you may be using. Some older applications may require the older OS, and newer applications may only run in the newer versions. You should always be able to view the specific requirements of any software you're using at the vendor's site.

As always, if you have any more specific questions in regards to which OS suits your needs best, please contact our 24/7 Live Chat, and we'll be happy to work with you towards the best-personalized solution for your needs.
